Who Buys Christmas Ornaments on Craigslist?

Last Year's Vegas Ornament Thief

A wealthy widow hires a guy to put up her Christmas tree and place
her ornaments on it last year.

This year under the crunch of our economy she musters up the gumption
to decorate her own tree and save herself 100 dollars. When she gets
her boxes down this year she finds them full of newspaper and tissue
paper- devoid of all her old ornaments. Granted some were probably
nice crystal wacky expensive angels and such, but really???!!

The guy maybe gained 100 dollars at most on craigslist... but who
buys used Christmas ornaments??

What an awful indicator of where we have gotten in this world.

Fly Fishing: A Moral Presentation


As humans we have the ability to constantly find better ways of achieving our means. Since the first man hurled a stone toward the animal that would become a meal for his family, humankind has been on an endless journey to find more efficient ways to serve our purposes.. However, when those purposes fall into ones of conquest, it is the one who has the most effective mechanism who triumphs, whether the victor is right or wrong in achieving his goal. With breakthroughs in more advanced technology, power is now in the hands of a multitude of individuals. Our time calls for this power to be blended with reason, rational thought, kindness, and balanced respect for both the natural world that is left and the generations which will inherit it.


In the past, men relied on the wilderness and its inhabitants for physical sustenance and its own survival. As technology has increased, a family’s dependence on the natural world has decreased. This has bred less respect for that which we do not rely on and it has taken its toll on the few wild areas we have left. Although as part of the animal kingdom we are still “called into the wild”, its purpose in our lives today is almost completely asthetic. Wild lands are a place for our return to normalcy. Inexplicable as it may be for some, nature plays a key role in the mental health of all societies since the time of clans and tribes. Therefore, to preserve all aspects of a healthy population for future generations, we must do our part to preserve nature. While a return to the wild may be called upon to derive pleasures such as fishing, we must consider less abusive methods in which to manifest those desires. The passion of the fisherman has been around since the beginning of written time, but it is now that we must find that balance of respect for those we hook to ensure the world’s fish will still school in the dreams of our grandchildren.

Conventional methods for fishing the world over have been largely for the sole purpose of killing the fish for food. Therefore, little thought was given to the well-being of the fish. These methods involved the use of a uniform, thin line with weight attached at or near a baited hook. The weight was used to hurl the bait away from the angler toward the likely area of fish, and hold the baited hook stationary at the bottom of the streambed for an extended period of time. While it is unnatural for a fish’ food to be anchored in a moving current, it allowed the bait to remain in the view of the fish and in turn increase the likelihood of a strike on the angler’s line. Consequently, a baited line while stationary allowed the fish to completely swallow the hook causing irreparable damage and killing even the fish that were too small for the frying pan. The baited hook method does not allow the angler to release the smaller fish, if he chose to. Human reasoning should be used not only to find ways of bettering our civilizations, but to do so in the least obtrusive and ruinous manner.


Fishing with a fly has had many different methods and meanings over the centuries it seems. And we are coming back to some of the earliest methods a second time around. But to imitate a food source perfectly in order to catch a fish seems to be the recurring theme. The fish whose instincts relied so heavily on this natural food presentation were the sleek river fish- the trout, salmon, char. Certain families of trout for instance can feed with such grace that at times when an abundance of insects cover the waters, a watchful observer can count an unwavering, perfectly timed, rhythm between the trout’s “surface sips”. The trout concentrates its efforts exclusively on the size, shape, color and presentation (or natural drift) of the bug that is hatching, mating, or depositing eggs throughout the day. These insects are so minute and delicate that to skewer them with a hook to use as bait would destroy the insects body and wings and be unrecognizable to the fish.


So to catch the elusive trout, the earliest fly anglers began imitating these various insects by wrapping different combinations of lightweight materials around the shank of a fine hook. Common furs and feathers were used, and naturally repelled water. The structure of fur is hollow- allowing it to trap air and retain buoyancy for the fly. Feathers taken from various parts of birds had natural oils on them to shed water and keep them from sinking. Tying these flies to closely resemble the insect must have become a passion for anglers even when fishing for survival. To create the fish-catching flies using these inexpensive materials turned into an art.

Although these flies were effective, they had limited casting range due to their light weight. Due to the inventiveness of man, and the relentless pursuit of a few artists in this new aqueous realm, fishing lines were contrived to carry the featherweight lures longer distances and with greater accuracy. They were built to distribute weight throughout the entire line using the weight of the line, swung in rhythmic pendulum-like motion. The angler would then carefully place the fly at the desired distance and allow the line and fly to settle. Some of the first lines were made from woven silk and then greased for increased buoyancy. Longer rods also became the norm, allowing the angler greater leverage to wield these heavier lines throughout the day without tiring.

From the artful creativity found in the fly patterns to the beauty inherent in the graceful casts of the fly rod, this method of fishing evolved into a status symbol for some it seems. I imagine that when North America was explored by trappers and woodsmen fly fishing turned, once again, to a pure form: the most effective way to feed the primitive instincts of more fish in the family of Salmonidae, the trout.

These fish feed on one type of insect at particular moments throughout the day. Maybe changing their diet from large, orange caddis flies in the early morning to small, lime green mayflies at midday, and then to miniscule black caddis flies in the evening. Now that fishing pressure has increased and catch & release habits of today's anglers make the trout more keenly instinctive to what is right and wrong about a bug-looking thing in the water. So, a desire for larger fish or better numbers forces an angler to expend great effort in designing a fly that matches the size shape and color of the insects that feed the fish. The fishermen of today who will put themselves to the test of knowing the way of life beneath the surface of the water will reap the greater reward of the larger fish, not always. but more often. but, to understand the workings of nature in this way takes patience.

At some point in the evolution of thought and exploration of the physical and mental world, man has the choice to pursue the art of fly fishing not just as a means to sustain life, but instead as a passion. With an increase in civilization throughout the west we have other ways to more easily obtain a meal.

Truth is reality. That which is false is unreal. The more clearly we see the reality of the world, the better equipped we are to deal with the world.

There are other ways to catch fish that require far less preparation, skill and sober realism. Technological advancements in tackle have created lures that spin, buzz, clank and rattle. These were developed under the premise that if the lures could create enough confused emotion in the fish, it would strike. They work well for most species and it could be argued that they produce more fish, however the trout would still not be fooled entirely. Their impervious nature, we can assume through careful logic, could be directly related to the ever changing adaptations that life goes through in each new, successful generation.


Some fish, such as bass, will strike at a lure not out of hunger, but more often out of anger. They are more territorial. Anything making noise and disturbing the bass will be seen as a threat. Anything in any size, shape, or color that upsets the bass, will be struck at, even a large bullfrog or a small bird. The bass’ behavior revolves around their emotions.

Some older species of trout, such as the Dolly Varden, have the same territorial nature. The land-locked species known as Bull Trout are on the Endangered Species List in the lower forty-eight states. They remain in only a few locations after the last ice age retreated to the North. Due to special regulations on these waters, Bull Trout reach phenomenal size: mostly 5 to 12 pound. A few reach from 15 to 20 pounds or more. To catch these beautiful remnants of the last ice age on hardware type tackle would be quite easy, but could prove to be very detrimental to the remaining populations. Even if single, barbless hooks on spinning gear were used, and the catch and release regulations were adhered to, the exhaustive catch rate alone would decimate the few that are left. They make eye contact with their prey, strike and I have witnessed several give violent head shakes before they even know they are hooked. This fish strain is a very emotional decision maker.


Rainbows and cutthroats are hardly inclined to strike at something because it is buzzing or clanking, except for a few lures like the reliable “Panther Martin” and the later “spin-offs” that imitate a small bait fish. These trout are still controlled almost exclusively by their instinct.

The things you learn as an Outdoorsman

This morning I learned that sportsman and meth-heads end up holding the door for each other during those really odd hours of the morning at 7-11.


Behind this smile are several years of wandering in the woods while
waiting for the right shot. This is my buddy's first deer. Three of
us have been learning to hunt since we got out of high school. All
of us lost our dads in some way at an early age and weren't ever brought out in the field and shown what the heck to do. Instead we have been
stumbling through the whole ordeal and learning with a desire to experience it
correctly, not just take a life with bloodlust or even a hint of
machoism. This animal was harvested correctly and it's meat will be enjoyed gratefully.

There is a lot behind that smile.

Innovation



Tonight a long-time friend and I brought our families together over a meal in Portland. We have known each other since diapers, drifted apart until my graduation from high school and then rekindled a very unique and withstanding friendship. Our dads used to coach football together when they were in college and still remain very close friends today despite their economic differences. You could say we two boys echo our fathers.
My wife actually looks forward to hanging out with them which is a blessing I never take for granted. We enjoyed catching up respectively and amidst my vocal wanderings with my friend we turned to politics in a way that only two can do when we know we may not agree.

Switching from back-country snowboarding in Jackson Hole, he says "I don't want to spend too much time on politics, but now that it's been awhile how do you feel our President is doing?" With a few glasses of wine under my belt I felt no shame in getting to my point quickly so I started with healthcare.

As of now I am unemployed and carrying only a major medical policy and I prefaced my soliloquy with that to him. Then I continued with "What do you want to know? Do I advocate socialism, communism? Do I dig Marxist theory? If we standardize healthcare by making the wealthy pay for everyone and even the playing field of coverage and the pay that the medical field sees it will in turn lower the standard by which we operate." He sat there silently knowing he opened up a can of worms that was going to get all over the boat in short order. "When is the news telling us of a new breakthrough that some Canadian made in asthma research? It doesn't happen because they aren't going out of their way to experiment and make changes to what we currently know because what's in in it for them?"

He quickly retorted from the gut "Yeah, they are waiting for us to do it".

Without hesitation I said "Exactly! That is what a free market economy gives us!" And the conversation ended just as abruptly as it started, yet we went on to enjoy the evening with each other wholeheartedly. That is a great friendship. I'd like to think the conversation turned away because he knows he just hit it out of the park for my team.

Innovation.

Could you imagine if the government dictated what we pulled our drift boats around on? Every trailer would be the same and there would be no one with crazy enough notions that there is a market for something better. No one would have thought to add a winch and roller to a flatbed trailer offering protection with all around versatile utility. No one would have spent hours in a machine shop developing a rack that held a gear raft above the drifter for the guides and super-avid river-rats. And definitely no one would have been allowed to add recessed motorcycle wheel chocks to the deck (because that is another agency that governs those products). We would have no trailer to haul motorcycles and quads as well as your driftboat and raft, not to mention just being able to use it for getting a load of lumber for the deck you had been been putting off. There would be a few regional manufacturers of driftboat trailers and a few manufacturers of motorcycles trailers and they would all operate under the guise of being able to build what they want, within their own specific limits of course.

What FinChasers has developed is the epitome of the free market and represents exactly what gets stifled when legislation removes the capacity/desire for an individual to achieve the pinnacle of greatness.

Everyone Can't Be in Your Front Row

Below is a forwarded email I received. I forward a half dozen emails a year and when I do it is usually to a select 2-5 people. But last night (and into the wee hours of this morning) I had a front row seat in a basement full of speakers and amps. I tried to be sly about recording with my iPhone and figured I'd ask later and not interrupt what he was asking the guitar to do.


He says we "accidentally" recorded the intro and a few tracks to a new album idea that dawned on him last Sunday morning. I guess when a person has the ability to make a guitar sound as whimsical as a whistle and you know what sound you want then the genius can manifest itself in less than two days- I spent months designing a flat-bed trailer and I still don't know if it's done. I don't play any instruments myself but to be that close to how it all works musically in someone else's mind ranks right up there with tying the perfect steelhead fly and bringing an anadromous beast to my hand.


Life is a theater - invite your audience carefully.

Not everyone is spiritually healthy and mature enough to have a front
row seat in our lives.


There are some people in your life that need to be loved from a
distance.

It's amazing what you can accomplish when you LET GO, or at least
minimize your time with draining, negative, incompatible,
not-going-anywhere
relationships/friendships/fellowships!

Observe the relationships around you. Pay attention to:

Which ones lift and which ones lean? Which ones encourage and which ones
discourage?

Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going
downhill?

When you leave certain people, do you feel better or feel worse?

Which ones always have DRAMA or don't really understand, know and
appreciate
you and the gift that lies within you?

When you seek growth, peace of mind, love and truth, the easier it will
become
for you to decide who gets to sit in the FRONT ROW and who should be
moved to the balcony of your life.

You cannot change the people around you...but you can change the people
you are around!

Ask God for godly wisdom and discernment and choose wisely the people
who sit in the front row of your life.

I was looking at all other brands for a shoe that came in "widths" and the REI sale person kept telling me to try the Keen. I tried everything else and came close to finding exactly what fit my foot correctly. I finally let her get me a Keen and I couldn't believe what someone had made for my foot. I am wearing them right now and they are divinely inspired. Now I just wish they made shoes to go over waders for the fisherman lifestyle as well.

A jaded fly shop employees final requests to customers

As I prepare for my departure from the fly shop manager life of riches, fame, and glory, I'd like to get something off my chest. Its a small list of requests, suggestions, rants and facts directed towards the every day fly shop customer. New and old, rich and poor.

1. Under no circumstances enter the shop and let the first words that roll out of your obviously silly grill be, "So whats hot". Stop and realize what an open ended statement that is. Try saying, "Hey I'm not as awesome as you, and therefore know nothing, I promise tidings of beer and my hot sister if you teach me your ways". Watch what happens then you [REDACTED] [REDACTED].

2. Don't complain about the price of flourocarbon, it makes you look like you don't know what you're talking about.

3. If you rip your brand new Cloudveil waders on a piece of barb wire its not my [REDACTED] fault.

4. I really don't want to hear about the 20 fish between 12 and 18 inches you caught on the Arkansas last weekend. I'd honestly rather chew glass than listen about all the small fish you and your buddy caught "on the dry", "it was epic bro", [REDACTED] gag me.

5. Just because you know some guy who guides for some shop I've never heard of doesn't mean you get the "bro hook-up".

6. No matter how many fish you catch, it doesn't make you any less of a douche for wearing that bright orange Simms vest.

7. Wet fly is no longer an acceptable description of a nymph. Period.

8. If you are going tarpon fishing but don't want to spend "a lot of money" on gear…….don't go tarpon fishing.

9. Step into the 21st century folks! We have better fly patterns than the Orange Asher and the Royal Coachman nowadays. Buy a [REDACTED] extended body Beatis that flaps its own wings with the help of a microchip and nano-motors. Geez.

10. And finally, people please, PLEASE!!!!!!! Replace your fly lines more than once every 5 years. Most of us replace it yearly, hell, I replace mine quarterly. The reason your line doesn't float, is because you have been stepping on it for a year and never cleaned it. Its not the line company's fault. And it sure as hell isn't mine. Its yours.

There it is. Lets work towards nirvana in fly shop employee-fly shop customer interactions. I leave this list in hopes that it will one day help the brothers working the long hours listen to people bitch about something they know nothing about. And here's to humidity, sand, gators, and redfish. I'm out with no more time left for lip service.

#10. Bugatti EB110 - $500,000

You know these are expensive crashes when a $500,000 super-exotic barely makes it to #10 on the list. This 1992 Bugatti EB110 was being driven by a mechanic as part of its annual checkup. He claims there was an oil slick on the road which caused him to lose control and crash into a pole. The owner of the Bugatti is a famous "feel good" guru named Emile Ratelband. Not sure how good he was feeling after this wreck.



#9. Pagani Zonda C12 S - $650,000

Only 15 Zonda C12 S were ever built but that didn't stop this owner from driving it like a bat out of hell. He crashed this beauty in the wee morning hours while driving in Hong Kong . 



#8. Mercedes Benz SL 300 - $750,000

The SL 300 "Gullwing" represents the very finest of Mercedes. It is THE classic car. Unfortunately, there's been more than one crash involving this masterpiece. You're looking at a car that was once worth nearly a million dollars. The owner thought it would be a good idea to race it on the streets of Mexico . No, not a street race, but the annual "La Carrera Panamericana" race which is limited to classic cars produced before 1965. 



#7. Jaguar XJ220 - $1 Million
Here we have our first million dollar crash (and we're only #7 on the list). The XJ220 once held the record for highest top speed for a production car (217 mph). 



#6. McLaren F1 - $1.25 Million

The McLaren F1 took over the Jaguar XJ220 not only in price, but also highest top speed at 231 mph. (broken only in 2005). There were only 107 ever produced, and several destroyed. Including this one driven by Rowan Atkinson, the popular actor who plays "Mr. Bean". Atkinson has the unfortunate history of crashing multiple exotic cars, including an Aston Martin.

#5. Ferrari Enzo - $1.3 Million

The Ferrari Enzo sure seems to attract a lot of crashes. This is surprising considering the price tag. You would think the owners would be more careful, but we've documented at least 14 crashes involving the Enzo. That's nearly $20 million worth of crashes! The most famous was the Malibu crash of 2005, when the driver, "Fat Steven" Eriksson crashed the car at 196 mph. Below is the result.





#4. Bugatti Veyron - $1.6 Million


The Bugatti Veyron is the most expensive production car in history. And unbelievably, it didn't even make the top three on this list. Only 300 are expected to be produced and already two have crashed. Below is the first one. The driver thought it was okay to speed at 100 mph in the rain. He only had the car for one week.




#3. 1959 Ferrari 250 GT TDF - $1.65 Million

Now we start getting into the extremely rare classic cars. The owners who are willing to take these machines on the road are just plain crazy. The ones that take them on the track are even crazier. This 1959 Ferrari 250 GT "Tour de France" crashed into a wall at the Shell Ferrari-Maserati Historic Challenge back in 2003.



#2. Ferrari 250 GT Spyder - $10 Million

Just when you thought it couldn't get much more expensive, the damage has been multiplied. The record price for a 1961 250 GT California Spyder at auction was set on May 18, 2008 when a black one was sold for $10,894,900. So what is one doing buried in the sand? The unlucky owner had it stored near the beach when a Hurricane hit. 



#1. Ferrari 250 GTO - $28.5 Million

We now present you with the most expensive car crash ever. Touted as the Ferrari that most successfully embodies the traits of the marque, the 1962-64 Ferrari 250 GTO became the most valuable car in the world. In 2008 an anonymous English buyer bought a 250 GTO at auction for a record $28,500,000. The crash below represents a car worth more than the combined value of all 14 Enzos involved in accidents. It is simply unbelievable that an owner would even dare take this car on the road. 

After a track event involving historic cars, the owner of this rare beast rammed into the back of another car after traffic slowed down.
