The preachers crossing the street look like The Polyphonic Spree. Or, at least, they're dressed like them. The guys in the black suits are most likely The Blues Brothers. The planes flying overhead are actual B-52 bombers. The fact that there are 2 of them makes them the B-52's.

Wow! We sure are getting fired up about all this. Since it is my blog and we've got name calling going on I feel I need to step in here. There was a great thread of information going back and forth but it has decidedly stopped ever since someone "anonymous" got all jacked out of shape.
This, like most good things on the internet, are supposed to be for information. The battle back and forth over what this ad depicts is getting silly. It has turned into a little forum for a few people to instigate a fight by (not exactly) stating "I know more more bands than you".
Let's get serious for a moment. If the horticultural specimen coming out of the grate in the street really was representative of "the Vines" it would have leaves on it and they could have put it on the back wall or something. Virgin is not trying to trick us. It is "The Roots". It definitely can be King Kong and the Gorillaz- nice work.
Now let's just turn on our califones and place the needle on a vinyl of "Man or Astroman?" and enjoy the art.

And I actually found a band called Bubble gum so that might be what the blond is about and i seriously think it's purple haze not deep purple. I dont remeber a mention of the rolling stones either but then again there are too many too keep track and I really dont think jewel or tatua or whateer are answers at all. They don't really fit the criteria in my opinion.
