Can the assurance of salvation encourage one to sin?

It certinaly shouldn't. One would expect that the reception of the salvation itself would be accompanied by an incredible sense of gratitude; such that an aggregious act (sinning with the attitude that "it's cool, I am covered") would bring to question... was the desire for salvation real in the first place?
Then there is the second school of thought. Salvation is NOT guaranteed (see 1 Tim 4:1, Gal 5:4).
