I think it's about embracing the person that God made you. In each of us is the desire to do good, be better at our core, become a positive addition to a community. In some people these desires are at the root of how they operate and live their life. Some people make choices that oppose these desires, maybe because it's easier... easier to convince themselves to do bad because that is what they have been dealt by others. It is what they know best.

Anyway, I don't think the Greg Brown is asking God to "leave him alone". I think Greg acknowledges the good that God gave him by saying "my actions are my own and You put the desire in my heart to do good and that is what I AM supposed to do anyway".
