A Big Dog Farewell

I don't remember ever being so sad. What a great friend- loyalty like I have never known. The perfect river dog. She never got in the water, she just found some shade and watched me fish. Except once when my dad and Todd and I were pulling Bull Trout out of the Metolius... I was hooked in and Todd and I were trying to wrestle the Bull out from the bank foliage when all of a sudden Cora decides she is going to help out or something. So there I am with a 20" Bull trout on the end of my line and my other arm wrapped around a 120 lb wet dog that is being sucked downstream. I don't remember if we banked that fish, but I banked the dog and that is what was important at the time. Photo credit to Richard Sprague... Nice one!



Once she put herself between us and a rattle snake. She wasn't going after it haphazardly, just standing ground between Lisa and the rattler.

Even last night as I laid next to her in the garage talking to her and petting her, she kept trying to lift her head once in a while when my voice would crack. She seemed like she wanted to be ready to keep away the impending danger she sensed in my voice. I kept asking her to just lay her head down adn take it easy for once. She wouldn't have anything to do with that. It was a rough night, for me anyways. This morning was bad but not as bad as it could have been. Tough times for the Sprague's but good lessons are being experienced by us. I hope Avery is doing better. Or at least better than me.

Those that make it

Watching "the Deer Hunter" I realize that what it probably takes for someone to endure a hardship of the ultimate degree is because they have faced mortality before. Nico, Stevie, and Deniro are in the water before they play russian roulette with the VC and Stevie has just loses it at the thought of having to go through the ordeal in a few moments. granted it wouldn't have been easy for anyone, but a person just can't give up for crying out loud. He hadn't even played yet but he just can't think straight. Deniro and Walken (almost) are able to keep a level head and that is what enables them to scheme the plan of escape.

When a person is given only a few moments to come to grips with their own death it makes your last moments pretty unbaearable I am sure. Those that have contemplated their death (in a healthy way) are the ones that are more likely to be able to escape it when the time comes.

I saw a side by side shotgun on the auction.  It's at 500 now and I would gather this gun will reach the 1000 mark in no time.  Look at a brief biography I found on the German dude who made it.  I am no advocate of Anglophilia but this guy was just obsessed with the manufacture of the finest steel and that is what makes a good firearm for crying out loud.  Actually afraid to post this just because it put some things together with history and value and I am not so sure that I am not going to bid on it if it stays at 500.

An "anti-new super-bore", down to earth reviewer of tried and true favorite calibers for Oregon Big-game hunters.  My .308, the white-man sniper's choice in vietnam, will prove to be the most sporting due to it's decreased maximum point blank range (+/-3") (according to Hawks) if I decide to take advantage of the Starkey tag I just pulled.  But having fished with Toots on the reservation last week, he said the preferred caliber has always been the .264 Magnum for the Natives.  I might need to buy a new set-up instead of using my 1974 Pawn shop rig.  

I just remember seeing a commercial for what looked like an on-line gun auction.  Can't believe that someone could get away with that in this day, but i am going to check it out.  Americasauction.com or something.

Oh man look at this action (literally).  This thing could fit me like a glove.  (I wonder how this will end up blogging out)

The heavy weight fluted stainless barrel measures just under 28" in length including the integral muzzle brake. The action has been plated to match the stainless barrel and give the rifle a very custom appearance. The stock is a green & brown laminated thumbhole design with beavertail forend, cheekpiece and adjustable buttplate. The rifle is further equipped with an aftermarket single stage trigger and modified safety to clear the scope. The rifle is topped with a silver Tasco 4-16x40 scope with adjustable objective and is steadied by an adjustable lightweight aluminum bipod up front. This is a really nice rig. The whole package is about mint with no evidence of use since it was built. My understanding is that the rifle was fired just enough to break it in. My hair is perfect, now if I only had some sheep

What an awful title for a blog, but bear with me. Ever since Middle School when you either learn how to act cool or be outcast, I won best hair. Again in High school, I won some action because of the do. Now I try to get by with the least amount of effort possible, and get "hollywood hair comments ,, when I take off my helmet no less. I have gone to the other extreme and have made my penchant for lack of style almost so intendedly non-important that it rivals being conceited. Shoot.

I enjoy no hair, but for the last 8 years my wife has told me that she doesn't dig the "gimme a bottle, I'm going to Iraq" look that got us liquor in high school. So I have been looking for the right length, and after 8 years of searching I have settled on 2-3" inches on top. It stands up straight and curls so slightly at the ends. Borderline Pompadorean, it could be construed as eccentric. But I deem it comfortable. I can roll out of the shower about 15 mins before work and, depending on the shirt I wear, I look like I have primped all morning. It's beautiful- my wife's improvements on me, and my commute.

Next topic: I eat like a king. For me the sign of wealth is sheep. More poignantly, spring lambs, with an organic mint jelly. Grown on your own land, there is no better way to eat. My wife and I have cut out preservatives and pesticides, manufactured food, etc. and I have never felt better. I have lost weight by enjoying big fat Bratwursts and stuff with organic mayo and ketchup.

Tonight I had lamb shanks served over a bed of roasted lamb leg.

Are you kidding? I mean really, 80% of the US population dreams of having that meal- not to mention the 99.8% of shepherds around the globe that can't wait for the next feast. But my point is that the kings of the world since the dawn of time had probably called up a meal like that more than once a day.

It's good to be the king.

9. Build the ultimate street/track bike
* I can't say much about the design because even a guy like Arlen
might be impressed to copy some of it. Nothing against Ness,
everything I have heard about him is that he is such a solid
individual. i am just saying that this design is that good.
* RC-51 engine? but make it so that it is happier than the stocker
from Honda when messing around town.
* Bring the front fork back into the tank and closer to the rider.
The pilot sits as if he is splayed out on a landspeed bike but laying
on the slope of the tank that cocks him back up at about a 30 degree
angle to the ground. Pilot can slip off of each side of the tank
when pulling the bike over into a turn.

What is it about a motorcycle...

I think there is no greater connection between man and machine than a motorcycle.... two wheels and an engine... but the key is controlling the engine with your own hand so directly- that is the link that feels so amazing.

...better yet to feel the engines power that has been customized by you and hear it roar while you feel the engine surge.
